NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN THE LEARNING COMMONS!
RESPECT OTHERS by using quiet voices and/or wearing/borrowing headphones. There is important thinking and learning happening.
RESPECT THE SPACE by taking back unused materials, returning tools back where they were borrowed from and recycling/throwing out garbage.
BOOK EXCHANGE TIMES:
Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 will have their library book exchange with their classroom teacher during their scheduled library time. Parent volunteers will be available to assist with checking in and checking out books. If not, teacher will all be trained on how to use the basic circulation system to exchange books. See Ms Tong for scheduled times.
BROWSING THE COLLECTION:
SEARCHING STICKS are handed out to students with numbers to help keeps books organized on the shelves. When a student sees a book they would like to look at, they can place their searching stick in that spot and pull the book out. The searching stick acts as a place holder for the book. If the book is not what they are looking for, then return the book to the spot and pull the searching stick out and continue to browse. If the book is wanted, then pull the searching stick out and meet at the designated area for check-out.
BORROWING BOOKS:
Students: Kindergarten and Grade 1 students may borrow 1 book per book exchange. Grades 2-6 may take out 2 books at a time. All books are due back in 2 weeks. Due dates will be stamped in agendas or Class Due Date reminders.
Incoming books are returned in the blue boxes by the circulation computer to be checked in by a parent volunteer or classroom teacher. Once books are checked in, students may sign out books by locating their class page and name in the CHECK-OUT binder, scan their student barcode and their book bar code(s).
Return a book to get a book! Students with books not returned or overdue MAY NOT take out another book. They may choose to temporarily read a book from the designated DESK SHELF while waiting for their class and return it to the same shelf upon dismissal.
LOST BOOK FINES:
If a book is overdue for an extended period of time, students are asked to pay for it. If it is found, payment will be refunded. The money collected goes to replenishing our library collection.
ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY:
Class access to the computer lab or Smart Board will be based on a sign up process with the teacher-librarian prior to requested date and time in order to maximize the use of space in the Learning Commons. Teachers must be present with their class for supervision.
Individual access to computers is available at recesses and with written permission in the agenda from the classroom teacher. The teacher-librarian will be present but may not be available to assist students if problems arise. Students will be sent back to class if there is no note OR there is no room for them to work OR if the student is not being responsible.
